Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) — Treatment Overview

1. General Information and Description

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a biocompatible, biodegradable injectable material used as a facial biostimulator to support the skin’s natural collagen production. Unlike traditional dermal fillers that primarily provide immediate volume, PLLA works gradually by stimulating the body’s own collagen production, helping to improve facial volume, skin firmness, and overall skin quality over time.

PLLA is commonly used for individuals experiencing gradual facial volume loss, reduced skin firmness, or changes in facial contours. It may be used in areas such as the cheeks, temples, lower face, and other areas where gradual restoration of volume and structural support is desired.

The treatment is designed to produce subtle, progressive improvements rather than an immediate or significantly volumised appearance.

2. How It Works

PLLA is injected into targeted areas of the face using a fine needle or cannula. Following injection, the PLLA particles are gradually broken down by the body while stimulating fibroblasts to produce new collagen.

As collagen production increases, the treated areas may gradually develop improved structure, firmness, and volume. The treatment therefore works through a process of collagen stimulation and tissue remodelling, rather than simply placing a volume-producing substance beneath the skin.

The amount, depth, and placement of PLLA are customised according to the individual’s facial anatomy, degree of volume loss, skin condition, and treatment goals. Multiple treatment sessions may be recommended to achieve the desired level of correction.

3. What to Expect and When Results Appear

A PLLA treatment typically takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated. A topical or local anaesthetic may be used to improve comfort during the procedure.

Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising, or mild discomfort may occur following treatment. Some patients may initially notice an increase in volume due to temporary swelling or the treatment vehicle, but this generally settles as the area recovers.

The collagen-stimulating effects of PLLA develop gradually over several weeks to months. Improvements in facial volume, firmness, and skin quality become more noticeable as new collagen is produced and the treated tissues undergo remodelling.

Because the response develops progressively, a series of treatment sessions may sometimes be recommended rather than a single treatment. The longevity of results varies between individuals and depends on factors such as the amount of product used, treatment area, number of sessions, age, lifestyle, and individual collagen response.

4. Who Is a Good Candidate

PLLA may be suitable for individuals who:

• Wish to stimulate natural collagen production
• Are concerned about gradual facial volume loss
• Notice reduced skin firmness or elasticity
• Wish to improve overall facial structure and skin quality
• Prefer gradual and natural-looking improvements
• Want to address signs of facial ageing without significant immediate volume
• Are looking for a minimally invasive approach to facial rejuvenation

A consultation with a qualified medical professional is recommended to assess facial anatomy, skin condition, treatment goals, and suitability for PLLA treatment. Individual results and treatment requirements may vary.
